Lins Derry

Maya Brin Institute for New Performance Artist in Residence, School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies
Lins Derry is a choreographic designer working in dance, data representation, and human-computer interaction. The body is often her site for investigation and intervention in design and performance, where she analyzes how choreographic thinking can be applied to design processes. Her current work explores how scientific datasets can inspire humanitarian responses through a performative process she calls data embodiment. She also researches how choreographic interfaces can increase kinetic and spatial interactivity between humans and technological systems. Derry is currently an artist-in-residence at the Maya Brin Institute for New Performance at the University of Maryland, College Park, and a principal at metaLAB (at) Harvard, an experimental arts, humanities, and design lab made up of scholars, designers, artists, and technologists.
In 2020, Derry graduated with distinction from the Master of Design in Technology program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Previously, she performed professionally with dance companies in New York, San Francisco, and Montréal, including TAKE Dance, Hope Mohr Dance, and José Navas/Compagnie Flak. She toured across North America, Europe, and Asia with these companies, performing at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Oslo Opera House. As a solo artist, Derry performed at Korea’s Modern Dance Festival, the Beijing Dance Festival, DOCK11 Berlin, and other venues through her platform Linsdans, culminating in an Isadora Duncan Dance Award (Izzie). She now serves on the advisory boards of Springboard Danse and Bridge Live Arts.
